Description This Regency japanned chinoiserie sewing cabinet dates to the early nineteenth century, circa 1815. The cabinet is of rectangular form and decorated throughout with chinoiserie scenes across each exterior panel. The decoration depicts figures in landscape settings with traditional Chinese buildings, framed by borders of flowers and foliage, all set against a japanned ground. The cabinet opens from the top, releasing two front doors which provide access to the interior. The upper section is fitted with a partitioned tray containing sewing equipment and storage. Beneath the top tray are three drawers, each decorated with blossoming floral panels and fitted with turned handles. The drawers open to reveal further storage and retain a selection of sewing items including coloured threads. The cabinet is fitted with a working lock and retains its tasselled key. A well preserved japanned sewing cabinet with chinoiserie decoration and fitted interior. View the full Sewing Box collection.
